Real Madrid and Skype: the perfect match

Real Madrid, the most successful team in UEFA Champions League history, continue to win on and off the pitch.

Microsoft and Real Madrid recently announced a four-year collaboration agreement that will revolutionize the digital experience enjoyed by players, staff and supporters of the club.

The alliance makes Microsoft the strategic technological partner of Real Madrid, providing digital services to build new fan communities, bringing us closer to the players than ever before. Orlando Ayala, an avid football fan and Microsoft’s Chairman & CVP Emerging Businesses, announced the ground breaking partnership on The Official Microsoft Blog, adding:

“Strong communities are built on a sense of connectedness: people coming together and interacting on a shared and relevant purpose. This is what our partnership with Real Madrid is all about – bringing people together in a different dimension of community and connectedness. Technology is only an enabler, playing a supporting role while showcasing the community of fans as the stars of the show.”

This emphasis on community proved apparent as soon as the first in a series of planned activations kicked off, if you’ll pardon the pun, on March 12, 2015 at the famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The “Fan Sticker Album” is the first digital album, created by Real Madrid fans from all over the world to rally support for the team. It’s a take on the classic and highly collectable football sticker albums from the 1980s and 90s with a contemporary twist — because on this occasion the fans, and not the players, are the stars.

Thousands of ‘Madridstas’ from 118 countries uploaded their stickers. Of those fans, the 12 whose stickers best represented the values of Real Madrid were chosen to participate in a live Q&A video call. This lucky dozen got to quiz players Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Chicharito and the world’s most expensive footballer, Gareth Bale via Skype, with 10 out of 12 of the calls shot in HD using Skype TX.
